Handsewn tifaifai blankets on display in Tahiti.

About tifaifai

Tifaifai is a typical tahitian blanket. It is an artform that involves sewing a design in one fabric onto another. Though you can find them machine stitched, we traditionally handsew them in the appliqué technique. We decorate our homes with them, gift them to newlyweds, and even just offer them to our loved ones.

Tifaifai has become a part of our cultural identities as French Polynesians. Missionaries first shared the art of patchwork with us 200 years ago and over time we adopted and transformed it into what it is today: a colorful emblem of tahitian culture.

ABOUT OUR BUSINESS

The goal here at “Tifaifai by Rava Ray” is to keep this part of our culture alive! We want to share this ancestral knowledge with anyone eager to learn and hope that tifaifai will become a part of every household that holds Tahiti dear to its heart.

To achieve this we hold tifaifai online classes and in person workshops, sell patterns, ship our handsewn blankets worldwide, and create tifaifai kits for those that would like to learn in the comfort of their own homes!

Our atelier is located in Haapiti, Moorea. If you’d like to visit, send us an email at ravaray@gmail.com !
